Projects

I am involved in a number of projects, many of which have been in progress for months, or even years. They go through phases of keen activity, then quiescence.

There are distinct focus areas for my work, and there is a lot of synergy and overlap between them.

Family Survival Guide to the ICU

  • Beginning

Having a child or loved one in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) is one of the most stressful experiences a parent or caregiver can ever go through. We know. We spent 14 long days in the Pediatric ICU with our son Felix. This booklet is written for parents, by a parent. It is written to help you survive. The information is also useful for older siblings, grandparents, close friends, neighbors, ICU staff, and anyone else who might help you and your child survive your time in Intensive Care.

Felix Maus The need is to tell this story, this crazy story of what happened to us one summer, the story of when my only son, my first born child came within a whisker of dying, both in body and in mind. He fell 30 some-odd feet from a tree and cracked his skull, shattered his thigh, crushed his wrist and slipped into a coma from which he almost didn't wake up.
It was the brain injury that freaked us out, after the nearness of death, of course. The crooked road of life plunged us into a chasm so deep we didn't know if we'd ever get out alive.
This is that story. It started one Saturday in June high up in a red cedar tree. Or, it started ten years before when a ten pound boy named Felix came into our lives forever.
